International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 each year. It is a most important day of international celebration for the political, economic and social achievements of women. International Women’s Day started as a Socialist political affair, the celebration blended in the customs of loads of countries (first and foremost Russia and countries of former Soviet bloc). International Women’s Day in some customs lost its political flavour, and become an occasion for men to articulate their love to women, to some extent comparable to Mother’s Day and St Valentine’s Day mixed together. In other countries and customs, nevertheless, the political and human rights theme as elected by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in an optimistic approach.
